This Italian thriller even though it has a good production, good cinematography and a very interesting premise it doesn't really make a big impression.
A mother returns with her son and daughter to the place where she was born. A small town that hides many secrets. Her father doesn't welcome her back and orders her to get out of town. But she stays and he lets them stay with them at the old hotel he owns. After their mother's sudden disappearance Daria and Mauro must find out what happened to their mother, and they know that their grand father is hiding something. They discover that the town is cursed and from the lake emerges your doppelgänger that is all those thing that you repress from yourself.
Is a very interesting premise, to have a doppelgänger that lives his life just the way you would't dare to live. The down side to that, he has to kill you so that he can take over your life.
With seven episodes I thought that I was in for a treat, but instead the pacing is uneven, with episodes that go very slowly and other where the story moves quickly ahead. Very interesting characters that somehow don't really shine throughout the season.
Like some other series we have a two sets of characters, the young ones whose life's around school, partying and hiding secrets from their parents, and the Adults that also have secrets of their own and old romances and grudges to get over with.
Federico Russo and Margherita Morchio who play Mauro and Daria are good actors, with good screen presence but somehow fail to make an impression. It was Lukas who makes the best impression on the show with a very interesting story arc, but with a poor resolution to it. The series is boring at times and this could have been the Italian Dark.
Ezzio Abate is one of the creators of Curon and he also worked on Netflix's Suburra: Blood on Rome and the Sky original, recently purchased by the CW Devils with Patrick Dempsey. So I'm kinda surprised that this thriller wasn't better. It gets lost in the mythology of it without really getting us to know the very interesting characters that live in Curon.
Still if you like thrillers and the supernatural you might find this series interesting and maybe just maybe without many hopes up you can manage to enjoy it. It was released mid week and this series reinforces my theory that the Netflix series that get a midweek release is because they are not that good.
Is a shame but maybe they can course correct for a second season if they get one.
