Alma (played by Maite Perroni) is a woman that has the strong feeling that her husband Leonardo (played by Jorge Poza) is cheating on her. She confides her suspicions to her best friend, Brenda (played by María Fernanda Yepes) who convinces Alma to go out and have some fun with her. That night Alma's seduced by a young man Darío (played by Alejandro Speitzer) and her whole life would change after that night of steamy sex, that they repeated to us for almost half the season, with the young man.
This would have been a great erotic thriller, coming out of the infamous 365 an original Netflix Poland movie. But this series is produced by people who are more used to make telenovelas and Dark Desire goes into that terrain instead of a thriller. Epigmeo Ibarra was famous when he redefined Mexican telenovelas when he moved to TV Azteca and from those days he brought Leticia López Margalli to write this series, she worked on other soaps like Nada Personal and the hit movie Instructions Not Included. But also not included how to write a good thriller made for a streaming platform.
The series starts bad and it just gets worst with every single episode, brace yourself there's 18 of them. This was the same problem with The Club also starred by Alejandro Speitzer with more than 20 episodes, produced by Ibarra as well. This makes me think that both series were originally created and rejected by TV Azteca and for some reason Netflix decided to acquire them.
Speitzer's body is exploited to the maximum here, yes that. might have been a guilty pleasure factor during three episodes, but not enough to save the whole series. Also he might look so hot with or without clothes but his acting skills are not that good, makes me wonder what exactly did Manolo Caro saw in him to invite him to his next Netflix original movie. Not so blind item.
Fortunately for Alejandro the rest of the cast is equally or even badder than him. Except for, and I can't believe I'm actually going to say this, but except for Maite Perroni who somehow manages to be, lets just say the less worst of them all. She's actually good in most of her scenes, the only problem is when she's with her daughter Zoe (played by Regina Pavón) because they don't look like mother and daughter, but more like sisters. Perroni is only 15 years older than Pavón, on top of that she looks younger than her age and still very hot. So either they failed her casting or the casting of her 18 year old daughter.
Regina Pavón is also not that bad at her part, the thing is the scrip is so bad that it's almost impossible to look good when your lines are so bad. But still they did made a bad choice casting her, they should have gone for someone that looked younger, if they were betting on Perroni's star power. Yeah Perroni starred in Rebelde where the fictional group RBD jumped into IRL and was a Latin American success.
María Fernanda Yepes, who plays Brenda and the best friend to Alma, had the best scene in the whole series, towards the season, and hopefully series finale. She did her best at playing a very difficult scene which I won't spoil you, but she managed to look good in it and actually had me paying attention. It was probably the only scene without involving a nude Speitzer that had me watching intently. She did a good job and I praise her for that. Yes the series is bad, yes she was also kinda bad most of the season, but that scene, she did a good job there and I must say it. Now, it's not buzz worthy but it was the brightest light in Dark Desire.
