The hit german series came to an end with its third season. It was one of the most expected series of the summer and probably the year. I didn't prepare myself like others did. Some people I know rewatched seasons 1 and 2 before the release of the third one. I decided against it, watched the "previously on" clip before the beginning of episode 1 and felt confident that I knew where we where.
I guess I wasn't. At the end of the first episode I was confused as if I never watched Dark before in my life. I was having some trouble keeping up with the time jumps. Some characters I felt it was the first time that I was watching them. Episode 2, 3 and 4 all came by and not only I was still confused and still having trouble keeping up with the story, but also I was bored.
There I said it. I was feeling guilty, guilty about feeling bored with one of the most expected series of the summer which was also meant to be the end for the story. I cautiously asked some friends in a group chat and they also felt in some way the same as me. They did prepared themselves and watched season 1 and 2, others just watched season 2. But they all felt confused and were having trouble following the story, just as I did. It wasn't just me, I wasn't the problem, and a couple of them also confided they were a little bit bored. Thank you! Now I didn't felt so bad.
After episode 4 the story lines started coming together, with coming together I mean, they totally left aside a lot of characters and started to focus more on the Jonases and the Marthas. I feel that the best decision they took was ending things with season 3.
They had some trouble with season 2 but at the end they managed to rescue everything, but then they opened the multiverse door and it got so complicated that having more seasons of this would have destroyed the series.
Now I cannot say I'm disappointed with the series finale. It wasn't as good as I was hoping for, but not disappointing. Game Of Thrones still holds that crown, of how to destroy everything you built in just a couple of episodes. Dark bored me the first half, but the second half I didn't have much trouble following the story, it got more interesting. But still it got me feeling as if they talked and talked and talked, but without saying much. So by the last sequence the emotional power of it, got a little bit lost in the science theory behind the premise.
They tried to explain to the fans the theory and how a multiverse would work, but I think they forgot the human side of the story and it felt like a cold ending. Not that the series ever felt warm, but still, characters died, some of them more than once. But still I felt nothing.
I still can't wait to hear from the next project of the creators of this series Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese. But apparently they still don't have anything planned. But I guess they would take a break before starting a new world.
Louis Hofmann who played young Jonas, also doesn't have any projects coming up. Lisa Vicari who played young Martha, would star in the german movie Hannes.
Are you satisfy with how the series ended?
