A group of high school girls, that the only thing in common they have is that they all attend the same elite private high school somewhere in England. They band together to form D.G.M. (Don't Get Mad, Get Even). An anonymous organization that exposes bullies at their school. When one of the bullies they target is found dead, police gets involved and believe that D.G.M. is behind the murder, of course things escalate quickly and the girls would have to prove that D.G.M. only exposes the bullies and would never get involve in a murder.
This British series is based on the novel Don't Get Mad by Gretchen McNeil, while I complain that other series take too much time to get into the action, my complain here is the opposite, the throw us right into the action, without explaining to us how this group of girls, that were not friends, banded together to form D.G.M. Of course by the end of the series this four very different girls would become friends, but how they got together in the first place is my main question.
They unite to defend a girls reputation after her private pictures got viral around school by one of the jocks. But while trying to do so the reputation of said girl got a little more damaged taking her to make a drastic decision that left the D.G.M. gang wanting to disband the group.
Talking about a global theme this series also shows high school students exposing secrets by hacking their cellphones and social media post. A theme that was also present in Blood & Water from South Africa and Control Z from Mexico. The three of them available at Netflix. Did we miss something? Is no surprise that the main fear of a student is their phones content being exposed, as much as 20 years ago their main fear was their diaries being read and shown to the whole school, or your secrets being told by someone over hearing you or by your friend backstabbing you. But somehow this feels like all of that 5G talk and how they will control us, by making the whole world fear their best companion is also their worst enemy.
Get Even is meant for BBC iPayer the online companion for the BBC channel. This making it technically not a BBC series, there for, the lack of quality of it. As an online production this show has a certain look that would not be BBC approved. It is meant for teens, but somehow they managed to make this girls as naive as the characters from The Baby-Sitters Club, only they were school girls. True most of high school dramas make their students look and behave like college students. I understand completely the need to find a balance in this and show a more realistic high school. Still, this show went too far and by the time they wanted to get more real or take the girls into higher stakes, it just looks out of place.
They give us a cliffhanger in the season finale that hints that D.G.M. messed with the wrong people and now a secret society is going after them. Well that might have been realistic in The Pack but in Get Even it just sounded ridiculous.
I am a sucker for high school dramas so I jumped right into this one when first reading its premise. But the series was just like a bad Freeform thriller. "A" would be very disappointed in them.
