This miniseries about the fight for equal rights in the United States of America, set in the 70's. Had an incredible cast. Just with the name of Cate Blanchett I was expecting great things from this show.
Is has a great story, but there is something about the editing and the time jumps that cuts short the dramatic or the tension moments. I believe that they tried to be as true to the story as possible and there for there are not big dramatic moments. Nevertheless all the cast is superb in it. I wouldn't be surprised if they get some nods for Emmy's or the Globes. Although I don't know if the series was still eligible for this year's Emmys.
Sarah Paulson, Uzo Aduba, Melanie Lynskey, Rose Byrne, Elizabeth Banks, Tracey Ullman, Niecy Nash, among many other actress are part of this amazing ensemble.
I'm not fluent in women's rights history so I was surprised to see that Blanchett's character (PhyllisSchlafly) was actually against the movement, and against the equal rights act. The story centers a lot on her and is very interesting, because she is in a way the "villain" of the story. I loved that she wanted to play a woman with very strong convictions that were agains the female movement as whole. Even though she herself suffered from inequality. At home and at the government she was surrounded by a heavily male culture, that sidelined her most of the time, even when their agendas were very similar. For me Blanchett means quality. And as always is a delight to watch her, please give her everything.
Lately I'm not such a good fan of Sarah Paulson and I must say that kinda hated at the beginning of this series, every time she had a scene. Until near the end we have an episode centric on her character (Alice Macray) who in a way is a minion of Schlafly and she opens her eyes to the whole movement and realizes that they are right, that the United States needs the equal rights act. She looses the respect or the fear of Schlafly and creates her own opinions about the subject. And probably because her character has this story arc in which she thinks things thru and changes her opinion that I liked Paulson's performance. She's always great, is just that got tired to watch her on every Ryan Murphy show.
From the other side of the bill I loved Margo Martindale who plays Bella Abzug one of the principal fighters of the movement and enemy of Schlafly. Of course you find yourself rooting for her, but its in the lost battles where we truly see her pain and the amazing performance she is giving the whole series.
Although as a series might not have the best editing or pace and yes it gets a little boring at times. The performances are top notch and the value of the history lesson here is priceless.
Is definitely a must watch series.
