After a long hiatus this series that originally aired on TBS was moved to HBO max. Two years had to pass us by to see the trial of Dory and Drew (played by Alia Shawkat and John Reynolds). They are formally charged for the murder of Keith (that was played by Ron Livingston).
I have to admit I didn't loved the first season, it wasn't bad but when they started achieving cult level fandom, I did asked myself if I had watched the same series that they did. For season two I was more on board with the sarcastic ironic tone of the show.
Dory, Drew are friends with Portia and Elliott (played by Meredith Hagner and John Early) they are constantly defined by other adult characters as hipster millennials from New York City. Self absorbed, in constant need of attention, always trying to feel good about themselves, pretending to care about the environment, feminism, racisms or discrimination. All of this took them to take upon themselves the responsibility of finding Chantal (played by Clare McNulty) only to find themselves into big trouble.
Dory is one of the greatest anti-hero of all time. At first glance she looked to be the most close to reality from her group of friends, the one that you would think would not get herself into trouble. But she did, and boy she did. To a point that it is so hard to root for her, but somehow you do. Alia gives us an amazing performance she has been forgotten in the past, since her series aired in a low profile cable network. Now on HBO max, I would say the series has a better chance to get to a larger audience and with that get some award buzz.
This was by far the best season of the show, I was surprised about how much I enjoyed each episode. The foolishness of the characters still amazes me after three seasons, they somehow still manage to out do themselves.
Meredith and John are the best dynamic duo of the show, but this season they also proved themselves apart. They had their own independent storylines. In the last two seasons their story arc sticked them both together for the most part. But this time they get to spend some time on their own and they both made me laugh and just stay staring speechless at the screen amazed about how millennials they are.
The four of them get instant famous when Dory is arrested for murder, the tabloids, the social and entertainment shows can't get enough of them and even the fashion shows. They all want a piece of the hottest criminals in town.
Dory is surprised about how much attention she's getting, she's even disgusted by it, but girl we know what you did two seasons ago, so don't try and act so innocent. Dory and Drew manage to get the worst possible lawyers out there. Drew the best lawyer from the 80's and Dory a socialite that thanks to her parents got her first job, defending Dory. All of the episodes about the trial are just too good to be true. And they left us with yet another cliffhanger that has me crossing my fingers that I don't have to wait two years for the already green lit season 4.
This would have been a much better debut series for the streaming service, but I guess they opted with a big name like Anna Kendrick, but Alia Shawkat and her Search Party proved to be a much entertaining series.
What do you think guilty or not guilty?
