Tony McNamara created this miniseries (and I'm crossing my fingers that they transform it into a series) about Catherine The Great with Elle Fanning playing the title character. McNamara is a name you should remember he wrote the upcoming Disney movie Cruella and I find this funny, because as I was watching this series I was thinking: "this is the type of princesses that Disney never show us" although Catherine was an Empress.
Right from the start I loved this series, there was something about Elle on Maleficent that I didn't quite like, she didn't really made me feel anything, she looked plain and without much emotion. But her performance here is amazing, she's charming beautiful and with a mischievous look, with great comedy skills.
Of course this story is loosely inspired on the great Catherine. In a smart comedy that would want you to just start the next episode immediately.
Elle is not alone here Nicholas Hoult is as impressive playing Peter The Great, the Russian Emperor that Catherine had the fortune or maybe misfortune of marrying. She soon discovers that her husband and the rest of the Russian aristocrazy are not that well educated and sophisticated as in the rest of Europe.
So she starts planning, with the help of her few friends in the castle a coup d'état to overthrown her husband and become Russia's new leader, yes, even though she's not Russian. But do the people of Russia would really care about that?
Of course things don't go as planed and each episode we see her trying to navigate the royal hallways, endure quick and disgusting sex sessions with the emperor. Not really knowing how to react when he gives her a lover, fighting chicken pox, and teaching the servants to read.
An amazing production and wardrobe design, great chemistry among the whole cast, and of course those amazing performances by Elle and Nicholas, but specially Elle Fanning, make The Great worth watching.
Who knows maybe you'll want to start reading more about the life of the real Catherine, but I'll rather watch a second season of loosely based adventures of her with Elle Fanning as my nee favorite Empress
