Tanya Saracho created this exquisite show after working for series like Devious Maids, How To Get Away With Murder and exploring the LGBT storylines on Looking. She has a very strong resume and the three seasons of Vida are just that, pura vida.
For the third and final season of this series Lyn and Emma (played by Melissa Barrera and Mishel Prada respectively) keep discovering more secrets of their mother Vidalia. Keep the bar up and running, and somehow don't mess their own personal relationships. Lyn is dating Rudy Marquez (played by Adrián González) but things start to get rocky when meeting her future mother in law (played by Lidia Porto) your typical mother in law that over protects her baby. While Emma get some news from Nico (played by Roberta Colindrez) that swipes the rug under her feet.
I'm going to pause a little bit here just to highlight how hot the sex scenes between Melissa and Adrián were. They both are sizzling fajita hot. I was really rooting for Rudy.
A final short season of only 6 episodes seemed to few for this drama that got praised from the start. But at the beginning of the year Starz announced that the third season would be the last for our girls. I thought it was a creative decision, but now I'm starting to believe this was in fact a cancellation.
From the cinematography, the art design, the music, the performances, and the beautiful story, Vida captivated me for one last time. There was just one questionable episode, the fourth one, that although it was just beautiful to the eye. The quinceañera themed episode seemed to not fit into the storyline, and that wouldn't have mattered if the season had 10 episodes like the last one. But with a shortened season it seemed like a waste of time, when they could gave us some closure to the storylines.
With stories like this one, where there is no suspicious crime, or looking for a killer, or an alien invasion. I do get that you cannot have a closure for the characters and that the ending would always be an open ending. But still it left me in tears. Because yes the final episode is just so emotional, and dramatic, that had me the last half crying, and not just a I have a basurita in el ojo but full on tears pouring down my eyes.
Melissa Barrera was amazing from the start but the arc of Lyn was outstanding, even though it looked like she would never learn her lesson. Her toxic relationship with Johnny (played by Carlos Miranda) I felt so exhausted with her always coming back to ruin what little she got going for herself, and of course her relationship with her sister. Barrera proved her acting skills with this amazing and inmature character in her journey of owning it. I hope great things are yet to come for this regia. Next time you see her would be in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical In The Heights.
Emma played by the amazing Mishel Prada wasn't a sweet dove either. Her character also matured and got in touch with her more sensitive side, opening up to Nico, but still at first sight of trouble she would go back to her usual ice queen mode. Mishel Prada recurred at Riverdale and at the moment unfortunately doesn't have more projects lining up, I hope to see her again soon.
Eddy had her own emotional break thru, they might never told her they love her but Lyn and Emma did find a place in their hearts for their mother's wife. Ser Anzoategui did an amazing job playing Eddy and during this three seasons she had her fair share of drama and her character ended in what looked to be light at the end of the tunnel.
I'm always sad to hear that a series that I like is coming to an end. I know that there is a difference between getting cancel and ending on your own terms. But with Vida I am sad because there are not that many latino stories out there, not many female latinas, and not many female queer latinas. Vida had the whole spectrum of the rainbow in terms of queer representation. In such a colorful way that it really looked like paintings from famous latino artists.
This is one of the things that Mari (played by Chelsea Rendon) would definitely fight for. For more representation on film and television.
I am still shocked about the finale. I was sure that the third season had 10 episodes. IMDB still shows ten episodes for the third season, although the final four have no release date. But on social media Vida already thanked their fans for the support for the series. I am hoping that the last four episodes would air in the near future as a season 3 B. But this series has never been divided into A and B.
If you haven't see it, you have to do it.
