This series created by Jemaine Clement and produced by Taika Waititi. Yes you know him, he is one of Marvel's favorite directors after the success of Thor: Rhagnarok. What We Do In The Shadows comes back for an arguably better second season. This is not an easy achievement as the first one was praised by most critics and got a good following of fans, some of the series that start with the right foot stumble for their second season, but this is definitely not the case.
The documentary that follows Guillermo (played by Harvey Guillén) and the group of vampires he serves, continue with much more ridiculous and surprisingly funny chapters in the lives of this creatures.
The MVP of this season was not only Guillermo, played hilariously by Harvey. His character has the most amazingly incredible story arc, we explore more of his lineage and how he tries to fight his instincts so that he can still serve his master Nando (played by Kayvan Novak). And his relationship with him evolves this season or maybe it didn't we never really know with Nando.
The first episodes start good, but average for the series, then we get episode 5. A Colin centric episode. Here Mark Proksch proves that he is the most underrated vampire of the group and has one of the best episodes of the season, that fares much more better, if possible, after this one. To refresh your memory Colin is an energy vampire who works at a generic office, where he feeds from the energy of his coworkers by boring them almost to death. Colin on this episode gets a promotion, he discovers that with his new job title his coworkers must listen to him without arguing and that power corrupts him.
We also have a very funny and ridiculous episode where we discover that Laszlo (played by Matt Berry) is the mastermind behind some of the top charts hits of history and he was never credited for it.
Now this might seem like the type of comedy that a lot of people don't really get. But this is one of the smartest comedies on the air right now. Yes even when the stories are like when Colin met his biggest foe, and Internet troll. Now thats another must see episode.
The series keeps this fantastic 80's horror movie look, that seems even cheaper as it has the documentary format. But has great VFX when the story needs them. And that is the most entertaining and funny thing. That you most of the time forget that they are real vampires and then you get a surprise explosion or them turning into bats with the same realness as the rest of the visuals.
The Emmys basically ignored this series giving them just two nominations for: cinematography and sound editing. But they deserve nods for outstanding comedy series, supporting actors nods. If Harvey or Mark don't get a nomination I will completely loose faith in the Emys, although I don't really pay attention to them anymomre. Also they deserve nods for writing and directing for a comedy series.
The show has also some very funny cameos, this season Haley Joel Osment and Mark Hamil visited this group of vampires. The best of those two Mark Hamil of course as an old enemy of Laszlo, making him leave his friends and go undercover as a human in Pennsylvania, you know because it sounds like Transylvania. As a bar owner Laszlo immerse in the lives of the townies without them suspecting they have a vampire among them.
What We Do In The Shadows is truly one of the best comedies out there.
