Payton Hobart (played by Ben Platt) is back, this time he is running for the senate in the state of New York. He runs against a veteran in the position that rarely has to compete with someone for the seat. Dede Standish (played by Judit Light) is the current senator and is looking for yet another reelection when Hobart appears in the picture to try and take her place. Of course the campaign starts escalating as both candidates are hungry for power.
I wasn't a fan of the first season of this series created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, they both teamed up recently in Hollywood, I wasn't a fan of that one as well. They also worked with Brad Falchuk, he has worked on other and better Murphy projects like Pose or 9-1-1. Maybe he is one of the key factors that made a different story for The Politician.
The only good thing about season 1 was the season finale, where they made a time jump and introduce us to Dede and Hadassah Gold (played by Bette Midler) in those few seconds that we got to meet them I knew that the second season promised to be much better than the first.
I completely forgot about this series until I saw that it was going to be released. I wasn't expecting much even though I did liked that season finale and by the end of the first episode, of the second season, I knew things were very different than the first.
Ben felt more charismatic on his role, or maybe the pandemic is affecting me much more than I care to accept. I even thought he looks hotter this season. I never felt any type of connection with him the first season, but this second time around the character feels very different and I do see a human there, a human that you can relate or not too.
Another good news the twins played by Trey and Trevor Eason are almost a no show. I never understood why those characters existed or were in any way relevant in season 1, and fortunately they almost didn't show for the second one.
Gwyneth Paltrow who plays Georgina Hobart, Payton's mother is well...Gwyneth... if you don't like her, you are not going to like her here, if you like her, you will. If she's indifferent to you, you might enjoy her performance. She is running this season for governor of California, and her campaign is not what you would expect.
What can I say about Judith and Bette? they were fenomenal of course. All of their scenes are amazing, they are a fabulous duo and I hope I can continue watching them in future seasons.
Overall this was a far better season than the last one, something uncommon. Last season they were trying to introduce us to the world of Payton and understand him and other characters surrounding him. Now with that world established they can move forward with the story. Don't skip this second season just because you didn't like the first one, give The Politician another chance to win you over.

Another great thing is that time jump. The first season jumped a couple years ahead of that campaign for class president. To a time in New York where his group of college friends invite him to run for the senate, they already have a plan for it and they think he has a chance.
Now in this second season is again Payton in campaign, but they won't bore us with the details of being a senator, they did another time jump to run this time for another position. If this trend continues Murphy might have a five season series mapped out.
