This is yet another comic book adaptation, it was originally planned as a feature film but when Netflix green lighted the project they asked Simon Barry its creator to make it a series. This probably explains why this series felt empty.
The series revolves around Alva a tetraplegic orphan who one days discovers she now has powers, but those powers come from an aureola embedded in her back, the mark of the warrior nun. She is soon found by an order of warrior nuns that feel Ava is obligated to fight against demons with them.
The series was shot completely in Spain and has a very international cast. Starting by Alba Baptista from Portugal who plays Ava our new warrior nun.
It has a good production, good visual effects, music, great action sequences that are very well choreographed. The performances are also good, no one is bad, they do have a chemistry. And yet I was always waiting for this series to take off. But episode after episode, although they weren't bad, they weren't great either.
Warrior Nun is one of those series that couldn't find its own soul during its first season run. Getting a renewal? A part of me thinks it would be unlikely then again series like The Order get renewals despite not really shinning and others like Sense8 despite shinning get axed. So for me its still a mystery how Netflix takes the decision of renewing or canceling a series. After all they decided to save series like Designated Survivor or Lucifer only to cancel them after one season in their service. In the case of Lucifer only to save it once again.
But coming back to this nun, despite ending in a huge cliffhanger I don't see a real reason as to why continue this story, unless they make a lot of changes and shake backstage things around, maybe bringing more experienced people into the writer's room. To help find the soul of this nun.
One thing very positive about this show is that upon searching in Google for the comic book, just by looking at a few images you know that is a very sexist comic book. Sexy nuns fighting demons. The series, although having beautiful actress on the roles, they didn't exploit their sexuality or objectify them in any way. Not that I realized, maybe some of you who saw the series think otherwise. But I don't think they did and that is a very positive thing to say, next step is finding the light.
