Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is expanding the Archiverse. And from his creation comes the third series in the universe so far after Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. This third entry is also different in tone, while Archie went for Noir esque visuals and style, Sabrina went vintage thriller fantasy, and with Katy decided to go more relaxed taking themselves not so serious and more of a young adult drama.
This series is as stylish as Gossip Girl with much more less intrigue and backstabbing, no one is trying to solve a murder, or uncover a secret society that would doom us all. Is just a girl and her best friends doing their very best at adulting.
The first episode didn't really surprised me, but I'm the type that gives the new series a chance for a couple of episodes, but I honestly thought Katy Keene had as much as a chance of surviving as Charmed which I cancelled after the third episode.
But by the second episode there is just some charm in the cast members that made me stick around for the whole season. And yes I enjoy it. From the innocent jumping around from man to man, from Keene (played by Lucy Hale), the mystery behind this well connected brit girl Pepper (played by Julia Chan), the hopes and dreams and much more enjoyable version of Josie (played by Ashleigh Murray) who crossover from Riverdale to New York, to the diva of Jorge a.k.a. Ginger Lopez (played by Jonny Beauchamp). This series has the charm, the wit, the starlight that needed to get out from under Archie or Sabrina's shadow.
If you like those two series you won't necessary like Katy, or if you despise those series you won't necessary hate this one. Each of the entries has their own footing and can have their very own different fandom. Actually I cancelled Riverdale after the third or fourth season, can't really remember when.
Katy Keene so far seems to have much less buzz than the others, but maybe in the next couple of weeks that gets released on streaming platforms can get the boost that launched Riverdale to CW hit back on its first season. Archie wasn't as popular as he is right now when the first season ended, it wasn't until it hit Netflix when he became so popular. I don't really know if Katy will go to Netflix or if it would stay on the soon to be launched HBO Max.
What I know is that I still love Lucy, after getting tired of her for so many seasons of Pretty Little Liars, that I'm so proud of having characters like the one Jonny's marvelously playing on more main stream outlets like Keene. And yes watch Josie grow with a new set of PussyCats, which can easily be the story behind Nicole Scherzinger and the other PussyCats. As for now Katy Keene is still very much on the bubble and every day of May that goes by is a step closer to cancellation.
My verdict: Save Katy Keene.
