Much like Samson lost his power when they cut his hair. Supergirl lost her touch when she got those bangs and probably the new suit.
This used to be my favorite show of the Arrowverse but for this season it fell hard into a probably third place. A coincidence or not is Supergirl's make over, with a full suit instead of the skirt she rocked for four seasons and a new hair style that included those awful bangs.
The story from very early in the season changed and betrayed some characters like Lena Luthor (played by Katie McGrath). She used to be bff with Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) and nothing alike to her older brother Lex Luthor (played by Jon Cryer). I will pause here to praise his performance, he is a great Luthor, maybe not as great as Michael Rosenbaum version of the character in Smallville, but a great addition to the cast, that in a way is still mourning the exit of Jeremy Jordan and Chris Wood, who both returned for special appearances this season.
Lena's storyline felt odd the whole season never really bought the anger and resentment she felt when discovered that her friend was in fact Supergirl. I felt that the character overreacted, that the Lena we knew would have never reacted in such a way. This also caused that they side lined her for most of the season.
Jesse Rath who plays Brainiac-5 was in a beginning a nice addition to the cast in season 4, but now his character was despicable, boring and irrelevant. The whole story line with Dreamer (played by Nicole Maines) was a waste of time. I talked about before how sometimes pairing two characters romantically can harm a series, well this is one of those cases, the biggest looser here for me is Rath, who's character I rather see out of the series for good and would love to continue watching Maines in the series. Dreamer has proven to be a character that's been building up, as a person and as a superhero, we have seen her take better control of her powers and can stand on her own during a fight, without Supergirl's help.
Alex Danvers (played by Chyler Leigh) is another character that I didn't quite like this season and somehow the whole chemistry that she had with Kara was lost. In fact the irony here is that the title character lost that chemistry with most of the team. I hope this doesn't mean that there is trouble backstage like it seemed to be with Ruby on Batwoman.
They were some other high lights in the season for me, like of course the episode that belonged to the crossover and the episode titled "It's a Super Life" the 13th of the season and the 100th for the series. Like its tradition in many shows it worked as a pause to watch how much the series and the characters have grown from season 1. For Kara a what if... moment to see how if she had taken different choices would have affected her present. In a way the episode helped the series to get out of that hole they fell into.
The plan after the Crisis on Infinite Earths was to have a second smaller crossover between Supergirl and Batwoman, they somehow built a connection between them that would later in the season come in handy for both shows, but the pandemic truncated those plans. Maybe we will see them next season.
By the last three episodes the show managed to course correct the whole season that had derailed and ignited my faith in the show.
The season finale, please, consider while watching, that it wasn't shot, and the episode we see is the magical art of editing and trying to save an ending with what they got. And taking that in consideration it was a great episode, that of course left us some cliffhangers both on purpose and accidentally.
Some good news that this pandemic might have for us is that Melissa's pregnancy might not affect much her participation in season 6, now that they have a target of early 2021 to launch it.
